Sony (and Minolta) color profiles for Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Lightroom - UPDATED

I've created new Adobe Camera Raw and Adobe Lightroom color profiles (standard, faithful, landscape, leica, portrait, neutral, positive film, skin tone darker, skin tone lighter, vivid blue, vivid green, vivid red e vivid) for every Sony (and Minolta) interchangeable lens cameras:
I've photographed, under the direct sunlight, a 24 color GretagMacbeth / X-Rite table, then, after converting the RAW to DNG, I've created the standard color profiles with Adobe DNG Profile Editor. Starting from the standard profile and using as reference the "non standard" Nikon, Canon and Leica's profiles, I've created the creative profiles.
The standard profiles are accurate only for the A700, the A850, the A900, the NEX-3, the NEX-5 and the NEX-5N (where I've photographed the color table with the corresponding camera), for the other cameras I've just used the best matching one.

The profile files must be saved under the following folder (be aware that it could be hidden on Windows):

Windows XP:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera"

Windows Vista/7:
"C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\Camera"

MAC OS:
"/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera"

Thanks for sharing the profiles.
One comment: would you consider changing the internal profile name to be identical to the file name?
When Lightroom shows them in the list, you see something like "Vivid", so it's hard to know if it picked the right file.

The correct profile is always chosen, LR search the camera id inside each files.

Hi There,
Awesome work - a huge thing for alpha/nex owners.
A question- now that LR 3.5 is out - any chance of creating profiles for 5N anytime soon?

Maurizio said...

I've just updated the colour profiles adding support for all the new sony models (A65, A77, NEX-C3, NEX-5N and NEX-7).

Thanks for your efforts and your generosity in helping others!
Is the profile for the 5N created with the camera or did you just choose an existing one that matched?
Best regards,
Christian

Actually the NEX-5N standard profile is based on the NEX-5 real profile. I'm still thinking what NEX buy, the 5N or the 7.

Hi, thank you so much for these... may I get some help? I've tried looking for the folder to install this, but I don't have CameraRaw, only Lightroom. Where must I install these files for Lightroom? Thank you much again..

Maurizio said...

The folder is the same also if you don't have PhotoShop installed, CameraRaw and LightRoom share the same engine.

AXII said...

After a little digging, I found the folder :) It was hidden, and I had hidden folders turned on. Thanks again Maurizio!

Maurizio said...

I forgot to write that the folder is hidden in Windows.

Hi Maurizio,
I was also tempted between 5N+EVF and 7.
7 has more knobs, integrated EVF and flash shoe, better looks, but too much pixels (Comparing A77 versus 5N at dpreview comparometer, 5N is better IQ IMHO) and more noise. The 300 Euros plus is not deciding factor.

The 5N apparently has excellent IQ, small size, EVF is tiltable and touchscreen, but only alternating use of flash/evf/extmicro.

In the end, IQ is the most important thing for me. I have a remote control unit triggerable with the integrated one, so that is not BIG problem.

And lastly, I thought, inspite of all the hype, a 7 is still only a premium compact camera with CDAF, so it still lacks a lot compared to any DSLR - except the price -)).

The 5N is the same, but at least with a much lower, adequate price. And when taking a look at the fastly revolving evolution wheel of bodies (M43 bodies within less than 6 months, Nex 3, 5, C3, 5N and soon 7 within less than 1.5 years) an even better Nex will be lurking around the corner.
So I'd recommend the 5N now and tommorow, who knows -))

I just ordered the NEX-5N...

Great profiles for A900 and A700.

Thanks for creating these. I've been able to install the A55 and A700 profiles, but the KM7D is in XML format. How do I install those?

Maurizio said...

I fixed the 7D and 5D profiles there was a wrong file extension.

Liew said...

Just install Sony NEX5.
Really appreciate your work..

Hi Maurizio,

still no good weather for updating the 5N files? :-)
How are yor experiences with your 5N
Best regards,
Christian

Maurizio said...

I hope to have the time tomorrow, it's not so easy with a work and a family with two little children.
I really like the 5N, I mainly shot with manual lenses in raw, and so I've not used to much many of its features (that are jpeg and af lenses only), but the quality of the files (photo and video) is much better than the NEX-5.

Thanks for profiles ;)
I just want to correct You - in Windows 7 one should save in the following folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

Maurizio said...

The folder I've shown is the general one and it's valid for every windows users, yours folder is correct but the profiles will be avaible only for one user.

Raff said...

Thanks - any chance you can give me some pointers how I can load up the profile in Light Room (Adobe) once they are saved on my MAC? bit new to this... Cheers

Maurizio said...

Just copy the correct camera folder (for example "Sony SLT-A77") under the path "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera".
Now you will find the profiles under the Develop module, Camera Calibration section.

Thanks so much Maurizio - 1st day on light room so a lot to learn.. Loving the colour profiles esp Faithful and Neutral... Found the standard Adobe profile made all the Nex 7 shots look way over saturated... Keep up the great work! Raff
